In short
  • A good invitation message has a greeting by name, one line with the date, the personal link on its own line, a dated RSVP deadline and both your names.
  • Send the invitation 8-10 weeks before the wedding (6 at the latest) and set the RSVP deadline 3-4 weeks before, so there is time for reminders before the venue needs final numbers.
  • Send reminders only to people who haven't replied: a week before the deadline, on the deadline, then a phone call.
  • In Romania, godparents usually receive their invitation in person and each set of parents invites their own relatives.
  • Reply to every RSVP with a short thank-you, and answer plus-one and children questions the same way for everyone.

The message you send with an online wedding invitation needs four things: a greeting by name, one warm line with the date, the guest's personal link and the date by which you need a reply. On WhatsApp, two to four lines are enough; email can run a little longer. Below are 18 ready-to-copy messages, plus reminders and replies.

The wording of the invitation itself is covered in our guide to wedding invitation wording. This guide is about everything around it: the message that carries the link, the one that asks for an RSVP and the follow-ups, right up to "see you on Saturday". If you are marrying a Romanian, a little context helps. In Romania almost everyone receives invitations on WhatsApp, the godparents (nașii) traditionally get theirs in person, each set of parents invites their own relatives and friends, and many guests reply late unless someone nudges them.

What a good message includes

A link sent on its own looks like spam, and half a page goes unread. In between, five elements:

  1. A greeting by name. "Hi Maria!" rather than "Dear guests". On WhatsApp, a message without a name feels like a mass mailing even when it isn't.
  2. One line about you and the date. Don't repeat the whole invitation; that is what the link is for.
  3. The personal link, on its own line. Each guest or household gets their own link. Posted in a group chat, it stops being personal and the replies get muddled.
  4. A deadline with a date. "By 15 May", not "as soon as possible".
  5. Both your names, even if only one of you is typing.

For guests abroad, plus-ones and email

Foreign guests often need a little more: flights to Romania are worth booking early, and the invitation page is the place for travel and accommodation tips. Keep the subject line of an email plain and specific, so it is recognisable at a glance in a busy inbox.

Message 5 (guests from abroad)

Dear [name], we know Romania is quite a trip, so we wanted to tell you early: the wedding is on [date] in [city].

Your invitation has the schedule, travel tips and accommodation: [link]

The RSVP deadline is [deadline], but if you already know, we'd love to hear sooner.

When you RSVP, please send us their name too, so they're on the list at the door.

Writing to your Romanian in-laws

If your partner's family will read the message in Romanian, it is a lovely gesture to send it in their language, ideally with your partner checking it. Romanian relatives often expect a slightly warmer, more formal tone, using the plural "vă" for older people. Two short examples with translations:

Message 8 (Romanian, for in-laws)

Dragă [nume], ne căsătorim pe [data] și ne-am bucura din suflet să fiți cu noi. Invitația voastră: [link]. Ne spuneți până pe [termen] dacă veniți?

(Dear [name], we're getting married on [date] and would love you to be with us. Your invitation: [link]. Could you tell us by [deadline] if you're coming?)

Message 9 (Romanian, a reminder)

Bună, [nume]! Pe [termen] închidem lista pentru restaurant. Invitația e tot aici: [link]

(Hi [name]! We're closing the list for the venue on [deadline]. Your invitation is still here: [link])

Tip

In Romanian families, the parents usually send invitations to their own side. If your in-laws are doing that, give them a short message to copy, so every guest receives the same deadline and the same link format.

How to ask for an RSVP without sounding like a summons

Send the invitation 8-10 weeks before the wedding (6 at the latest) and set the RSVP deadline 3-4 weeks before the wedding. Then check your venue contract for the date the final head count is due (often about two weeks before): leave at least a week between your deadline and that date for reminders and phone calls. The full timeline, from save the date to the message the day before, is in our guide to online wedding invitations.

  • Say exactly what you need to know: whether they are coming, how many, how many children, any dietary needs.
  • Make "no" easy. A line like "if you can't make it, we understand, just tell us" unblocks people who stay silent out of embarrassment.
  • Write like yourselves, not like a form.
Instead ofTry
"Your attendance must be confirmed.""Could you let us know by 15 May if you're coming?"
"Please respond urgently!""We're doing the list for the venue next week; your reply would really help."
"No plus-ones permitted.""Your invitation is just for you, and we can't wait to see you."
"No reply will be taken as a decline.""If we haven't heard from you by [deadline], we'll give you a call."

Reminders: first, second and last

Send reminders only to people who haven't replied, and never in a group chat. The first goes a week before the deadline, the second on the deadline, then a phone call or one last message. The reconfirmation goes to everyone who said yes, a week before the wedding. Each message is a little more direct than the last, and just as warm.

Message 10 (first reminder)

Hi [name]! Just a quick note: we're closing the list for the venue on [deadline].

If you haven't had a chance yet, your invitation is still here: [link]

Message 11 (on the deadline)

[Name], today's the last day for RSVPs and we'd hate for you to miss out.

A quick yes or no here would really help: [link]

Message 12 (after the deadline)

Hi [name]! We're giving the venue our final numbers tomorrow and still have a question mark next to you.

Are you coming? A one-line reply is perfect.

Message 13 (reconfirmation)

Seven days to go! We have you down for [number] people.

Still right? If anything has changed, let us know by [day].

Note

Never tell a guest "we saw you opened the invitation". Knowing it helps you decide whom to call, but said out loud it sounds like surveillance. And never post a list of non-responders in the family group.

Your replies: thanks, regrets and awkward questions

A short reply to every RSVP tells the guest their answer arrived. When someone declines, thank them and don't ask why. For awkward questions about plus-ones or children, answer quickly and the same way for everyone. How to set those rules before anything goes out is covered in our guide to the wedding guest list.

Message 14 (after a yes)

Wonderful, you're on the list!

The schedule and map stay at the same link if you need them: [link]

Message 15 (after a no)

We're sorry you can't make it, but thank you for letting us know.

We'll miss you. Let's catch up soon and we'll show you the photos.

Message 16 (uninvited plus-one)

We'd honestly love to, but the venue limits us to [number] seats and we've kept it to people we both know.

We hope you understand. Can't wait to see you!

Message 17 (children, adults-only)

We adore the little ones, but this time the celebration is adults only.

If childcare is tricky, tell us and we'll think of something together.

Message 18 (can't reach someone)

[Name], we haven't managed to reach you and need to close the list.

We've left you without a seat for now. If you are coming, call us by Friday and we'll sort it out.

Sending it all from Celebrum

On Celebrum, each guest has a personal link and a code. From your guest list, the Trimite (Send) button opens your phone's share menu, where you pick WhatsApp, SMS or email, with a message already written, containing the link and the code, and you can swap it for any message above before sending. Where the browser has no share option, the message is copied for you to paste.

  • By email, the invitation, the reminder and the thank-you go straight from your dashboard to any guest whose address is on your list.
  • Notifications tell you when someone opens the invitation and when they reply, and your list shows who is still pending.
  • Guests can say they are not sure yet and come back later, change their answer until the deadline, and after the deadline RSVPs close.
  • Parents and godparents get their own links to add their guests and send the invitations themselves.
  • After saying yes, a guest can leave an email or phone number for a reminder before the wedding.

Sending by email, notifications and the links for parents and godparents are part of the paid Complet plan.

Frequently asked questions

Greet the person by name, add one warm line with the date, put the invitation link on its own line and give a date for the RSVP. Sign with both your names. Two to four lines are plenty; the details live in the invitation.
