Wedding invitation wording: 30 examples, plus bilingual RO/EN
Original wedding invitation wording in English, from formal to playful, plus bilingual Romanian and English templates for mixed families and the diaspora.

- A Romanian wedding invitation names the couple, the date, the church and reception times and places, the godparents (nașii) and the RSVP deadline.
- Here are 30 original wordings: formal, modern, playful, save the date, civil ceremony, wedding plus christening and RSVP reminders.
- For mixed families, bilingual cards work best when both languages carry equal weight and the date, times and places are written only once.
- Romanian guests give money in an envelope, so leave gifts and bank details off the card and share them discreetly if asked.
Good wedding invitation wording tells guests who is getting married, when (date and time), where (church, registry office, reception venue), who your godparents are and by when to reply. In Romania the godparents (nașii) usually appear on the card too. Below are 30 original English wordings, plus bilingual Romanian/English templates for mixed families and the diaspora.
What a Romanian wedding invitation includes
If you are marrying a Romanian partner, or inviting Romanian family from abroad, the card carries a little more than a typical UK or US invitation. Here is the checklist we use.
| Element | Needed? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Your names | yes | first names are enough on modern cards |
| Date, with the day of the week | yes | Saturday, 12 June 2027 |
| Church ceremony: time and place | if you have one | the religious ceremony is separate from the civil one |
| Reception: time and venue | yes | Romanian receptions often start in the evening and go on past midnight |
| Godparents (nașii) | customary | a married couple who sponsor the wedding and stay close to your family for life |
| Parents | optional | often named as co-hosts |
| RSVP deadline and how to reply | yes | phone, personal link or QR code |
| Dress code, children, accommodation | only if relevant | one short line, details on the website |
Romanian guests traditionally give money in an envelope rather than choosing from a gift list. You do not need to mention gifts on the invitation at all. Our guide on how much to give at a Romanian wedding explains the custom for foreign guests.

Bilingual Romanian and English templates
For mixed families, the trick is to keep both languages equal in size and the practical details (date, time, place) written once, in numbers. Romanian usually goes first when the wedding is in Romania.

Together with our families, we invite you to our wedding.

On a bilingual card, avoid translating idioms word for word. «Să ne fiți alături» becomes "to celebrate with us", not "to be beside us".
Asking delicately: children, dress code and gifts
Adults-only weddings
Romanian weddings traditionally include children, so be gentle. Address the invitation to the people invited and, if you need a sentence, try: "We have planned this as an adults-only evening and hope you enjoy a night off." Tell close family about any exceptions in person.
Dress code
Explain it in plain words: "evening wear", "garden party, comfortable shoes (we'll be on grass)". Romanian relatives may not read "black tie" the way British guests do, so add a short description.
Gifts and bank details
In Romania, guests give money in an envelope (darul), often handed over at the end of the evening. Printing a bank account (IBAN) on the card can feel like a demand to many Romanian families. Leave the card clean and, if guests abroad ask, share your account details on the wedding website or privately. For guests from the UK or elsewhere, a short line on the website such as "Your presence is the best gift; for those who have asked, our details are below" works well. Amounts are usually discussed in lei; as a rough guide, 500 lei is about €100.
Wording mistakes to avoid
- Official language: "the solemnisation of the marriage" sounds cold. "We're getting married" is enough.
- Missing times: in Romania the church and the reception are often hours apart. Give both times.
- No RSVP date: without one, most replies arrive in the last week.
- Misspelt names: ask your godparents and parents to read the card before it goes to print.
- Missing Romanian diacritics on bilingual cards: "Brasov" instead of "Brașov" looks careless to Romanian relatives.
- Too much text: put travel, accommodation and the full schedule on your website.
Next step
Pick a wording, fill in the brackets and read it aloud. Then decide on the format: printed, online or both. Our guide to online wedding invitations covers timings and RSVPs, and you can design the printed card, menus and QR cards in the same theme as your website.
Frequently asked questions
Your names, the date, the time and place of the ceremony and the reception, and the RSVP deadline with how to reply. At a Romanian wedding, the godparents (nașii) are usually named too, and parents often appear as co-hosts.
Give both languages equal space, put Romanian first if the wedding is in Romania, and write the date, times and places only once, in numbers. Translate the meaning rather than word for word.
The nași are the wedding godparents: usually a married couple who sponsor the ceremony and stay close to the family for life. They are traditionally named on the invitation after the couple.
Most Romanian families find it too direct. Guests traditionally bring money in an envelope; if guests abroad ask, share your details privately or on your wedding website.
Address the invitation to exactly who is invited and, if needed, add a warm line such as "We have planned this as an adults-only evening and hope you enjoy a night off." Children usually attend Romanian weddings, so tell close family in person.
