Orthodox wedding calendar 2027: when Romanians can't marry in church
Every 2027 period without Romanian Orthodox church weddings, with exact dates, a month-by-month table of free Saturdays and how civil ceremonies fit in.

- Orthodox Easter is on 2 May 2027, so there are no church weddings between 8 March and 9 May.
- Other closed periods are 1-2 February, 9-10 June, 19-28 June, 1-15 August, 29 August, 13-14 September and 15 November to 6 January 2028.
- Church weddings are not held on Wednesdays or Fridays, so 7.7.2027 (a Wednesday) works only for a civil ceremony.
- 2027 has 32 Saturdays free for an Orthodox church wedding, 21 of them between May and October.
- Civil weddings can happen any day the town hall officiates, and must come before the church ceremony.
In 2027, Romanian Orthodox church weddings are not held during the four fasting seasons, Bright Week, major feasts and their eves, between Christmas and Epiphany, on 29 August and, as a rule, on Wednesdays and Fridays. Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027, so most of spring is closed until 15 May. Civil weddings can take place at any time.
If you are planning a wedding in Romania, or marrying a Romanian partner and wondering why your future in-laws keep mentioning «the fast», this guide gives you every blocked period with exact dates, a month-by-month table of free Saturdays and the practical workarounds couples use. The dates come from the list published by Doxologia, the portal of the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina, cross-checked against the 2027 Easter date.
Why Easter decides your wedding date
Most of the Orthodox calendar moves with Easter. In 2027, Orthodox Easter is on 2 May, five weeks after Western Easter (28 March). That has three knock-on effects:
- Great Lent and Bright Week cover all of April and the first half of May. The first free Saturday after Easter is 15 May.
- Pentecost (Rusalii) falls on 20 June, which makes the Apostles' Fast unusually short but still blocks the last two weekends of June.
- Summer is generous: July has five free Saturdays, and September and October have none blocked at all.
The church is not being difficult. Fasting seasons are times of restraint, and a Romanian wedding is the opposite: a feast with music until dawn. That is why the rule covers the church ceremony (cununia religioasă), while the civil ceremony at the town hall is unaffected.

a second list, also on Doxologia and widely copied by Romanian news sites, starts two periods on the preceding Sunday (7 March and 14 November). The difference only affects those two Sundays. If you want either one, ask the parish priest before paying a venue deposit.
The long spring gap: 8 March to 9 May
This is the longest closed stretch of the year, nine weeks in total. It includes the week before Lent, the whole of Great Lent, Holy Week and Bright Week after Easter. The last good Saturday before it is 6 March; the first one after it is 15 May.
June: Ascension, Pentecost and a very short fast
Ascension is on Thursday 10 June (eve Wednesday 9 June), so it does not touch a weekend. Pentecost weekend (19-21 June) and the Apostles' Fast (22-28 June) do, so in June only 5 and 12 June are free Saturdays. The feast of Saints Peter and Paul itself (Tuesday 29 June) is not a blocking day, so Saturday 3 July is fine.
August, September and the run-up to Christmas
The Dormition Fast runs from 1 to 14 August, with the feast on Sunday 15 August. On 29 August (a Sunday in 2027) there are no weddings either. That leaves 21 and 28 August. The Exaltation of the Cross falls on Tuesday 14 September, so September stays fully open. The Nativity Fast starts on 15 November, which makes 13 November the last church-wedding Saturday of 2027.
Wednesdays and Fridays
These are weekly fast days, so church weddings are not held on them. That matters for «pretty» dates: 7.7.2027 looks lovely on an invitation, but it is a Wednesday, so it only works for the civil ceremony.
2027 month by month: the good Saturdays
| Month | Free Saturdays for a church wedding | What is blocked |
|---|---|---|
| January | 9, 16, 23, 30 | 1-6 January (incl. Saturday 2nd) |
| February | 6, 13, 20, 27 | 1-2 February (Mon-Tue) |
| March | 6 | everything from 8 March |
| April | none | Great Lent and Holy Week |
| May | 15, 22, 29 | 1-9 May |
| June | 5, 12 | 9-10, 19-21 and 22-28 June |
| July | 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 | only Wednesdays and Fridays |
| August | 21, 28 | 1-15 and 29 August |
| September | 4, 11, 18, 25 | 13-14 September (Mon-Tue) |
| October | 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 | only Wednesdays and Fridays |
| November | 6, 13 | from 15 November |
| December | none | Nativity Fast, 25-31 December |
That gives 32 Saturdays in 2027 for an Orthodox church wedding, and only 21 of them between May and October. Popular venues and bands in Bucharest, Cluj or Iași are often booked 12 to 18 months ahead for those dates, so autumn 2026 is the right time to lock in a 2027 wedding.
book in this order: the church and the priest first, then the venue, then the photographer and the band. The most painful story we hear is a couple who paid a venue deposit for a Saturday in the Apostles' Fast and found out from the priest six months later.

Civil weddings: any time, but first
The church calendar only governs the religious ceremony. The civil ceremony takes place at the local registry office (starea civilă) on whatever days and hours the town hall sets, fasts or not. Under the Romanian Civil Code, article 259(3), the religious ceremony may only take place after the civil marriage, and the priest will ask to see your marriage certificate. Paperwork and deadlines, including what foreign citizens need, are covered in our guide to civil marriage in Romania.
A common pattern is to marry at the town hall on a weekday in Lent with close family, then hold the church wedding and the big party on a free Saturday in May or June. One invitation can carry both dates.
Ioana and Tom (she is from Cluj, he is from Manchester) wanted early May 2027. Because 1-9 May is closed, they did the civil ceremony on 23 April with parents and godparents, and the church wedding plus party on 15 May, giving the UK side a single weekend to fly in for.
Catholic, Greek Catholic and mixed couples
The list above belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church. Other churches have their own rules:
- Roman Catholics do not have an equivalent list of forbidden days. Parishes discourage lavish weddings in Lent (10 February to 28 March 2027), and marriages are not celebrated during the Easter Triduum. Book directly with the parish.
- Greek Catholics keep a tradition close to the Orthodox one around fasting seasons, but dates can differ; check with the parish priest.
- Mixed couples should first decide which church will host the ceremony. The calendar that applies is the one of the church where the service takes place.
Exceptions and how to talk to the priest
Exceptions are rare and are not granted because a venue happens to be free. In genuinely special circumstances (a seriously ill parent, a permanent move abroad), speak to the parish priest, who can tell you whether a bishop's blessing can be sought. And if you are also thinking of a wedding and baptism on the same day, choose the date by the wedding rules, which are stricter.
Next step: lock the date, then plan backwards
Once the Saturday is set, the rest falls into place: church, venue, photographer, invitations. Our wedding planning checklist walks you month by month from 18 months out, and our guide to what a wedding costs in Romania helps you set the budget.
In the Celebrum planner you set the date and the tasks that hang on it (booking the church, the venue deposit, the invitations), with the budget and guest list in the same place.

Yes. The fasting rules only apply to the church ceremony. The civil ceremony can take place on any day the registry office officiates, and it must come before the church wedding.
Fasting seasons are periods of restraint and prayer, while a Romanian wedding is a feast with music and dancing. The Church therefore does not celebrate the sacrament of marriage during the four fasts, on fast days or on major feasts and their eves.
Yes, Sunday weddings are allowed unless the Sunday falls in a closed period. Saturday is still the favourite, because the party usually lasts until morning.
